Uncovering the Best Markets in Rome
"You'll either love this most famous of all the large markets in Rome or you'll hate it. It's a 'mercato delle pulci' - flea market - and has taken place every Sunday morning since the end of World War II, on and around the Viale di Trastevere in the Trastevere district. Stallholders come here from all over Italy to sell an assortment of regional goods."
"Rome’s long-running Sunday fleamarket is a vast labyrinth peddling an overwhelming amount of antiques, vintage clothes, bicycles and second-hand bric-a-brac. It’s easy to get lost and you’ll have to watch out for pickpockets but if you get there early you might just find a bargain."
"The exterior of the Mercato Trionfale looks more like an aesthetically challenged office building than the setting for Rome’s largest public market. What the facade lacks in character, the interior more than makes up for in quality and variety of its products. The south side of the market, just a few blocks from the busy Vatican Museums, houses fishmongers selling local and imported catch - look for anchovies, clams, and octopus caught in the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea - while the adjacent interior stalls are run by local farmers, a rarity in Rome, and sell produce grown just outside of the city."
"A gorgeous neo classical architecture shines over the Mercato dell’Unita. Here, in the heart of the Prati area, you’ll have plenty of time to pick up some delicious food!. Pick up some fresh seafood if you are staying in an apartment and have opportunity to cook!"
"Via Marmorata, 41 (Testaccio) Daily 6am–9pmpasticceriabarberini. Insider tip: it is impossible to walk past this historic pasticceria without being enchanted by the artistic display of sweet sins behind its windows, serving locals and VIPs alike since 1925. Their dedicated team of bakers only use natural ingredients, steering clear of preservatives."
"Strawberry tiramisu and hazelnut tiramisu from Bar Pompi|Courtesy of Marianna Hunt. For those with a sweet tooth, a visit to Bar Pompi should be on the cards in order to taste one of Rome’s most famous desserts: the tiramisu. Diners come from all corners of the globe to admire the creamy deliciousness of Bar Pompi’s take on the delicacy, which comes in multiple flavors including pistachio, hazelnut, and strawberry."
"If you ever will ask an Italian where you can try the best Tiramisu in Italy, he will probably get offended and reply that there is no better Tiramisu than that of his Nonna (granny). Soon after his choice will definitely fall on Pompi. Pompi is an all beloved Italian chain of confectionery that offers a variety of tiramisu choices."
"Pompi has consistently made the best tiramisu in Rome for decades. If you happen to eat lunch or dinner near here, skip dolce and have it here. If you ask someone local to Rome where to get the best Tiramisù, 9 times out of 10 they are going to say Pompi without hesitating."

"A maritozzi con la pannais a sort of raisin studded bun (not dissimilar to a brioche), sliced in half and filled with enough whipped cream to warrant a pie-in-face slapstick sketch. Where: These are a common Roman pastry but those at Regoli Pasticceria are renowned. They also recently celebrated their centenary anniversary, a testament to how good their simple but surprisingly moreish buns are."
