9 Days on Maui
"Here, kiawe trees give the unspoiled area a robust flair while the outlying atoll of Molokini seems close enough to touch. To fully appreciate this side’s grandeur, brave the ruttier parts of Makena Road to witness Keone’o’io Bay. Regularly referred to as La Perouse, this rocky province is the result of Haleakala’s most recent eruption, which is evidenced in miles of alien-esque lava formations and tide pools brimming with unusual species. Intrepid swimmers can paddle out for the chance to swim near dolphins, while the red-tinged edges of Kaho’olawe dazzle in the distance."
"Boats usually visit two sites: the crystal clear Molokini Crater and a second reef for spotting sea turtles. During the winter, whale watching is included. We recommend booking with the intimate and family-owned Aqua Adventures. Paddlers may prefer kayak and snorkel excursions along the coastline, offered by companies like Maui Ecotours."
"Start the day with an express tour of snorkeling at Molokini Crater, as some boats, like Kai Kanani, have you back before 9 a.m. From there just focus on one part of the island, whether it’s experiencing Lahaina, beach-hopping in Wailea or simply taking the entire day to drive the Road to Hana."
"With its clear water, white sand and hala-tree backdrop, this famous crescent is a little gem; author James Michener once called it the only beach in the North Pacific that actually looked as if it belonged in the South Pacific. When the surf’s up, surfers and bodyboarders flock here, though beware of rip currents. When it’s calm, swimming is good in the cove."
"Take your provisions down to Hamoa Beach, a horseshoe of salt-and-pepper sand shaded by ultra-green trees and, on the clearest of days, views of the Big Island. Bathe in the vistas of its ruby-tinged cinder cone: Mark Twain and James Michener called this cove their favorite beach in Hawaii."
"Locals love Hamoa Beach for its clear waters, dark creamy sand and optimal body boarding conditions when the surf is up. It was hard for me to gauge the beauty of this beach on a cloudy day but, nonetheless, it’s a good pit stop if you can find a parking spot ( a challenging task)."
"The Seven Sacred Pools at Oheo Gulch is a far better option for swimming in pools, plus there are many waterfalls (Venus Pools doesn’t have waterfalls.) Another reason we like Oheo Gulch is because it’s managed-well, meaning they’ll shut down access if water levels become dangerous upstream. You’re not going to get killed from a flash flood with this system in place. It can also handle a large volume of people, so you never feel crowded. Skip Venus Pools for all these reasons and also because it requires trespassing."
"The drive from the national park to Wailua Falls traverses through a rugged area known as the Oheo Gulch. This short stretch of road is the most slow-going and perhaps the most scenic section of the Hana Highway. Be prepared for a pothole-filled one-lane road where 10mph seems like a stretch. However, there are also waterfalls and streams galore, and everything seems to be just a little extra green."
"One branch of Haleakala National Park runs down the mountain from the crater and reaches the sea here, 10 miles past Hana at mile marker…"

Intrepid swimmers can paddle out for the chance to swim near dolphins, while the red-tinged edges of Kaho’olawe dazzle in the distance."
"Once you’ve explored Kihei, drive further down the South Side and enjoy the golden sands of Makena Beach aptly known as Big Beach, and then continue on South towards La Perouse. Park up at the furthest point and take a hike through rugged lava fields along the coast by La Perouse Bay."
"In the later afternoon, drive south to La Perouse Bay to hike and watch sun set along the ruins and lava fields – remnants of Haleakala’s most recent eruption in 1790. On the way back to hotel, grab a Mexican dinner with a Hawaiian twist at Maui Tacos in Kihei or Lahaina."

"There are a number of boat companies that offer the trip, but we went on a catamaran called Mololo which sailed from Maalaea Harbor, which is around a 30 minute drive away from Ka’anapaali. Upon reaching the crater you get your snorkel, mask and flippers and into the water you go. The water was absolutely crystal clear and whilst I didn’t see that many fish, it was beautiful."
"Snorkeling in Molokini Crater is undeniably one of the best parts about visiting Maui. Here in this crescent, submerged volcano off Maui’s southern coastline, over 250 species of fish inhabit a world-class reef. Experience water so exceptionally clear you can see down 75 feet, and swim with schools of tropical fish while cruising the vibrant reef."
"You’ll get a great view from the Kaumahina State Wayside and you can use the bathroom there too. Continuing on, you’ll catch a glimpse of black sand beach at Honomanu Bay (but the views better on the way back)."
"Order: Cocktails, margarita pizza, bolognese, and black squid ink pasta (prepared by Chef Matteo himself!). The pasta texture was amazing, ingredients were…”more"

"Designed and conceived by Peter Lik, this gallery is it`s own work of art and features the photographer`s panoramic photographs of landscapes that truly showcase the brilliance of nature. See firsthand why this Australian photographer has been called "the most important landscape photographer alive" and earned the title Master Photographer."
"Day 4: Visit Ho’okipa Beach & Hike the Bamboo Forest Trail I hate itineraries that are too rigid. And so this is a free day. What do you want to do?"
"For the land portion of the two-day adventure, consider a hike with Hike Maui or tackling the Waihe‘e Ridge Trail and stop in Pāʻia to shop and eat in the island’s happiest town. The second day will be spent on the water and start early with a catamaran cruise to Honolua Bay or maybe a surf lesson with Hawaiian Paddle Sports or Maui Surfer Girls. End the day with an evening show at Old Lahaina Luau, and let the sunset bring your two-day island adventure to a close."
"Or get your last dose of action by hiking Waihee Ridge Trail for sweeping vistas of the valley and ocean. Treat yourself to dinner at a nice restaurant. We like Roy’s in Kaanapali for its fusion of Hawaiian and Asian fare and offering of a separate, creative à la carte vegan menu."
"Trek into the clouds—literally—on the Waihe’e Ridge Trail, a moderate, uphill hike that supplies impressive, panoramic views of the island. At the top of the trail, you’ll find a clearing and picnic tables; pause for a spell and dig into your spread."
