Fontana dam: it's an engineering miracle. It's 480 feet high and, unlike many other dams, no water spills to the top. When the reservoir is full and close to capacity, water is discharged through the spillway at the bottom of the dam. The Fontana dam was built when the United States entered World War II to generate electricity and produce the aluminum the country needed during the war. The dam stretches 2365 feet across the Little Tennessee River.
